Judging this year's Shadows Awards

A quick note that I am one of the judges for this year’s Australian Shadows Awards, part of the Australian Horror Writers Association.

The Australian Shadows is an annual literary award presented by the AHWA and judged on the overall effect - the skill, delivery, and lasting resonance - of horror fiction written or edited by an Australian.

The award has five categories:
NovelLong Fiction (novellas and novelettes); Short Fiction (short stories); Collection (single author collections); and Edited Publication (anthologies and magazine issues). I’m one of the Shorts judges this year and will list the winners once they are officially announced.

IN LAYMON'S TERMS Publisher's Weekly Review

IN LAYMON'S TERMS has had a very good Publisher's Weekly pre-release review. I quote the review below:

"Richard Laymon, who was known for his lean, mean horror fiction, died in 2001 at age 54. This substantial memorial anthology features photos, fiction, and interviews from his archives, as well as scores of essays and stories written in homage to his work. Best known as a novelist, Laymon also perfected what Norman Partridge calls the "gotcha!" twist-ending tale, epitomized in the classic "Desert Pickup" (reprinted here, and the model for other top fiction contributions, including Jack Ketchum's "Hotline" and Gary Brandner's "Campfire Story"). The common sentiment of the remembrances, most written by young horror writers, is that Laymon was a helpful mentor, and that his work was greatly underappreciated due to its hefty quotient of sex and violence. The editors have produced a discerning memorial to a fine and influential writer."

IN LAYMON'S TERMS is due to be released later this year. Order yours today at http://www.cemeterydance.com/

Podcasting

That's right folks. I'm podcasting.

I've always been a huge fan of The Goodies, so when the opportunity came up for me to do every second podcast for the one, only and best Goodies Podcast, I just couldn't say no.

I'll be in charge of every odd-numbered podcast - which means I'll be broadcasting once a month. You can subscribe on itunes, or visit the official website here to download the podcast as an mp3.

This is something totally new to me, and now has me thinking about some other ideas for podcasts.... look forward to more Gerlach Podcasts in 2011 in all various shapes, sizes, colours and varieties! Who knows were I'll pop up!
